  Goodbye Jolly~~ Heeeello Kony!

A devil named Simon made me do it...=p

This grinder is DEFINITELY not home friendly. Notable different cup profile (compared to the Jolly) with the limited test session we had tonight. Distinctly lack of bitters and reduced mid-tone. More test is needed.

Nice gear, what machine do you have there on the left?

Frankensteined Isomac Rituale ;-)

A Kony! Not bad, not bad.

I'm looking forward to test results.

If you want to get rid of your SJ, I have a friend here who may be interested. (you can email me)

I recall seeing a comparison between the Kony and SJ by Dan on H-B. He preferred the SJ.

That's not saying much, but it's one opinion I've seen thus far comparing the two.

Jason,

I could see why someone would prefer the SJ over Kony (or better yet, the Major).

I am actually a bit torn on this. The Jolly shot is smoother and more balance, but it also blurry the entire cup profile. It will emphasize the mid/low tone at the expense of lack of clarity and higher level of bitters. It also hides some problems in the roast.

The Kony, meanwhile, is brutally honest. It enhances all the high tone origin character, good or bad. So depends on the coffee, this large increase is clarity can be a good or really bad thing. The Kony cup also tasted "lighter" than the SJ shot, mostly due to lack of bitters and reduced roast notes

Kind of a HD versus regular TV thing.

Bottom line is, it all come down to coffee and roast. If you have really good stuff, tailor roasted to the Kony profile, the cup will sing, loudly. But a bit off, it will show you all the uglies. SJ, on the other hand, can tolerate a large range of coffee/roasts.

One good thing about the Kony though, the adjustment seemed to be a bit less sensitive which resulted in more consistency and fewer shots needed to hit the sweet spot.

Anyway, like stated, more test is needed =)

Everything you've just said mirrors my suspected qualities of conical grinders as a category in general.

From what I've read, it seems others would agree.

Brutal honesty is certainly a trait I value. I value it far more than masking defects.

Is the cup better? Well, that depends on your coffee, now doesn't it? (and that's just as it should be, imo)

SJ arrived today.

I outgrew it the second I set it up.

*sigh*

New burrs coming soon. And a doser lid. And a hopper. (I have the space for a full sized hopper)

BURN!

Jason,

Too bad the cheap Majors are no longer available. After using Jaime's for a bit, I prefer it much more than the Jolly. In fact, I think it's good enough to go side by side with the Kony.

But for the money, a used Jolly is really not a bad thing. Do use it for your brew coffee needs as well... the grind quality is worth the pain of switching back and forth.
